How WPM (Words Per Minute) and Accuracy are Calculated (Teacher & Student)

Discover the secrets behind WPM (Words Per Minute) and Accuracy—two essential metrics that can supercharge typing skills for students!

What is WPM?

WPM is all about speed—how fast someone types without considering errors. Here's how it’s calculated:

  • Formula: Gross typing speed = Total words typed ÷ Time in minutes
  • Word Definition: One "word" equals five keystrokes (spaces, numbers, letters, punctuation).

Example:

  • If you type 300 characters in 2 minutes, your Gross WPM is:(300 characters ÷ 5) ÷ 2 minutes = 30 WPM

What is Accuracy? Typing accuracy measures how precisely someone types by calculating the percentage of correct entries out of the total entries typed.

Example:

  • If you type 300 characters with 16 errors, you typed 284 correct entries.
  • Your accuracy percentage is:284 correct entries ÷ 300 total entries = 95%

Unlock the potential of your typing skills and watch your speed and accuracy soar! Happy typing!
