Archive a Class (Teacher)
Need to clean up your class list without losing valuable student data? The Archive Class feature is here to help! This powerful tool lets you hide inactive classes from your main view while preserving all student progress and maintaining their access to Typing.com.
How It Works
When you archive a class, here's what happens:
- The class disappears from your active classes list and moves to the new Archived section
- Students become individual users who can still access Typing.com with their existing accounts
- Students with a PLUS licenses via the archived class will lose PLUS when their class is archived
- All student progress and data is preserved, but no new student data is tracked (unless the class is unarchived)
- You can view the class anytime from the Archived section
- The class can be unarchived at any time to restore it fully, "re-attaching" students and restoring assignments
- Student activity from archived classes will no longer appear on dashboards or live activity views
Pro-Tip: Think of archiving as a "hide" function rather than deletion. Everything is safely stored and can be restored whenever you need it.
Note for Different Login Types: If you use Google Classroom, you'll need to unsync your class first before archiving. For Clever/ClassLink users, archiving simply hides the class while keeping everything intact. Username/Password classes can be archived directly with no extra steps.
Student Experience
When a student's class is archived, their portal experience becomes the same as any individual user:
- They will no longer see custom content or assignments from the archived class
- They'll have the default daily goal and other individual user defaults
- Students who had a PLUS licenses via the archived class will lose PLUS when their class is archived
- Individual user panel settings are preserved regardless of license status
IMPORTANT: Students in archived classes will not have their aggregate typing data saved. This means:
- Archived classes will be hidden from teacher reports by default
- Progress made by students in an archived class will not be reported at an admin level
- If you unarchive the class later, you may see student lesson progress but limited performance data
Important Considerations
Students in Multiple Classes: If a student belongs to both an archived class and an active class, they'll maintain their connection to the active class and continue having their typing data tracked.
License Management: When a class is archived, any PLUS licenses assigned to students in that class are returned to the license pool and become available for active, eligible students to pick up on their next login.
Assignments & Custom Lessons: When a class is archived, students can no longer access assignments or custom lessons created for that class. These will be hidden from both student and teacher views but restored if the class is unarchived.
Reporting: Teachers can still view reports for an archived class.
Co-Teachers: When a class with multiple teachers is archived, all teachers will see the change. The class will move to the Archived section for all co-teachers.
School and District View: Administrators can archive a teacher's class(es) by navigating to that teacher and viewing their classes.
